The year is 44 BC, the height of the Roman Republic. After the end of the civil war, Julius Caesar holds immense power. Many support him, but others feel only fear. That fear leads Caesar’s friends and allies to question his intentions, fueling a conspiracy that will culminate on the Ides of March with 23 stab wounds, a republic in ruins, and the birth of an Empire. In 23 Daggers, you take on the role of a Roman citizen with one of three loyalties: a loyalist to Caesar, a liberator of Rome, or an opportunist waiting for the perfect moment. You will travel through Rome manipulating other citizens and swaying them to your cause. At the end of the game, if there are 23 or more daggers in the Curia, Caesar dies and the most committed liberator wins. With fewer than 23 daggers, the loyalist who has worked the hardest to save him wins. Opportunists await the perfect moment to change Caesar’s fate; if they succeed, they win as a team. 23 Daggers is a game of social manipulation. Your citizen’s starting identity and loyalty are hidden, but these can shift. You’ll need to plan, stay flexible, and decide which side to support—or sabotage—as you navigate Rome’s political intrigue.
