Colt Express Game Contents
Colt Express is a wild action-programming, strategy, and adventure board game set in the Wild West. Designed by Christophe Raimbault, players step into the boots of ruthless outlaws holding up a passenger train with a single goal: grab as much loot as possible and emerge as the wealthiest bandit in the West.
The iconic 3D train is the centerpiece of Colt Express. The game board is built using a three-dimensional locomotive and several train cars where bandits move inside cars or climb onto the roof. As you attempt to loot wealthy passengers, you must also battle rival outlaws and dodge the relentless Marshal, who will do whatever it takes to ruin your robbery.
Combining action programming, hand management, movement, and high player interaction, players must plan their sequence of actions before executing them. Anticipating your rivals' moves is just as vital as deciding what to do with your own character!
How Do You Play?
A game of Colt Express plays over five chaotic rounds. Each round begins with a Scheming Phase where players take turns playing action cards onto a shared deck, guided by the conditions printed on the current Round Card.
During the Scheming Phase, players plan out their actions in order: moving between train cars, climbing up to or down from the roof, robbing loot bags and jewel cases, shooting rival bandits, punching opponents, or moving the Marshal. Certain Round Cards introduce special twists, such as tunnel sections where cards are played face-down, adding fog-of-war guesswork to the programming!
Next comes the Stealin' Phase. The programmed deck is flipped over and resolved one card at a time. This is where brilliant plans flourish—or crash and burn! A bandit hoping to scoop up a suitcase full of cash might arrive only to find a rival stole it a second earlier, or end up accidentally walking straight into a bullet.
Players navigate the interior of the train cars or scale the roof. From the roof, you enjoy greater movement range and clearer sightlines to shoot rivals. Punching an opponent forces them into an adjacent car and causes them to drop a piece of loot on the floor!
The Marshal poses a constant threat. Whenever he enters a car occupied by bandits, they are immediately forced onto the roof and take a Bullet Card. Bullet cards serve no positive purpose—they clog up your deck and limit your action options in future rounds.
After five rounds, the robbery comes to an end. Players sum up the value of their stolen loot. Additionally, the player who fired the most bullets receives the $1,000 Gunslinger bonus. The richest bandit claims ultimate victory!
Gameplay Experience
Colt Express delivers an immensely interactive, cinematic experience where player plans constantly collide. Simultaneous programming challenges you to read your opponents' minds, but incomplete information ensures that complete control is impossible.
The physical 3D cardboard train gives the game a striking, tactile presence on the table. Moving miniatures through car doors and climbing onto roofs makes positional awareness crucial for every tactical choice.
High player interaction is the lifeblood of the game. Outlaws can loot-steal, shoot, punch, and derail each other's turns, leading to hilarious chain reactions and dramatic reversals of fortune.
The programming system rewards memory, spatial awareness, and tactical adaptability. An action played early in the round might look useless initially, only to line up perfectly once the chaotic turns unfold!
With quick 40-minute playtimes and easy-to-learn rules, it is an outstanding option for families, casual gamers, and strategy enthusiasts seeking high-interaction thematic fun.
