Considered by many to be one of the greatest strategy games of all time, Twilight Struggle recreates in great detail the conflict that shaped the second half of the 20th century: the Cold War. Players will take command of the United States or the USSR to expand their influence around the world and ultimately win the game. Created by Jason Matthews and Ananda Gupta, this title offers games for two players, ages 14 and up, with an average playtime of about 3 hours. The central board shows a world map divided into several regions that players will try to dominate in order to score the most points possible. On their turns, they may distribute influence, promote coups or realignments, push the space race, or play events from their hand of cards. These cards depict some of the most important figures and events between 1945, right after World War II, and 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. True to the spirit of the Cold War, players of Twilight Struggle must maintain a balance that allows them to demonstrate strength without triggering nuclear war, which would immediately result in defeat. The tension during the game is constant, as players do not always control the events triggered by the cards. They are forced to play almost all the cards in their hand, and if the associated event benefits their opponent, it must be executed. However, deciding when to play an opponent’s event can be a double-edged sword, since its impact can often be minimized. In addition, players always have the option to hold back one card between turns or discard it to invest in the space race. Beyond events, the cards can also trigger scoring for different regions, where players will be evaluated based on whether they have presence, control, or domination through their influence. History enthusiasts will find in this game plenty of references and details that immerse them fully in the experience, while seasoned gamers will enjoy the challenge of managing a wide range of variables. Twilight Struggle is also an ideal game for those who have already started exploring the world of board games and want to take a more advanced step into the hobby.
