Adventure Games: Volcanic Island is a cooperative exploration board game focused on discovering and experiencing a story without the pressure of a time limit. Designed by Phil Walker Harding, Matthew Dunstan, and Chihiro Mori, it can be played by 1 to 4 players, ages 12 and up, in 4 sessions of approximately 75 minutes each.
Working together, players explore common areas, talk to characters, search for clues, and combine objects to reveal the story’s secret. Depending on the decisions made, the course of the story changes with no turning back. With multiple paths and possible endings, the game allows for repeated play without wearing out the components.
In Adventure Games: Volcanic Island, players take on the roles of four students — Sato, Cataysa, Ayana, and Jerome — who travel to a volcanic island where mysterious events occur. Like in a graphic adventure, they must solve puzzles, make decisions, talk to other characters, track clues, and combine objects. Each student has unique skills and an individual item.
Throughout the 4 chapters of the story, players can perform one of the following actions on their turn:
Explore a location by searching for the indicated card number and discovering what is at that point.
Combine two adventure cards to gain new effects or solve puzzles.
Combine a location card with an adventure card to interact with the island in new ways.
Depending on the objects found, players can combine them to unlock effects that alter the story, or even combine them with already explored locations, enhancing replayability. The team’s decisions determine the different possible endings of the story.
With the feel of classic “choose your own adventure” books, Adventure Games: Volcanic Island allows players to become part of a unique story and decide its ending: where to go, which objects to combine, and whom to talk to. It also includes app support that facilitates exploration and increases immersion in the story.
